It Is All Quiet in the Minor Hemisphere: A Fresh Look into the Laterality of Consciousness, Vision and Attention in Human Brain Abstract: This is a meta-analysis of the literature on laterality of motor control in relation to vision, neglect

چکیده
This is a meta-analysis of the literature on laterality of motor control in relation to vision, neglect and attention. It documents the role directionality of signal transfer between the two hemispheres. By indexing cases in which macular vision was spared or damaged in lesions affecting the minor or major hemispheres, respectively, it is shown that the minor hemisphere’s role is to dilate (extend) the space in which vision occurs rather than provide for elementary aspect of vision. The statistical relationship of the laterality of seeing and speaking to that of behavioral handedness of subjects in studies employing inspection time and lexical decision paradigms are reviewed; further defining the distinction between the two modes of handedness(i.e. behavioral and neural). Evidence is provided indicating that brainedness (i.e. the laterality of the executive hemisphere) stands for the destination of all signals achieving consciousness and that the minor hemisphere represents three-dimensional reality of space. Awareness to that reality, however, awaits arrival of signals arising from the nondominant side of the body/space to the major hemisphere via the posterior aspect of the callosum. This explains the fact that neglect occurs exclusively in lesions affecting the minor hemisphere, as defined in this article. This is a comprehensive review of clinical, neuropathological and physiological data indicating that macular vision occurs in the major hemisphere and that handedness itself is a reflection of the laterality of conscious awareness.

Evaluation of Hemodynamic Response Function in Vision and Motor Brain Regions for the Young and Elderly Adults
Introduction: Prior studies comparing Hemodynamic Response Function (HRF) in the young and elderly adults based on fMRI data have reported inconsistent findings for brain vision and motor regions in healthy aging. It is shown that the averaging method employed in all previous works has caused this inconsistency. The averaging is so sensitive to outliers and noise. However, fMRI data are o...
متن کاملAssessment of brain laterality among Iranian addicts and smokers
Previous research supported that the prevalence of addiction is related to brain laterality. Brain laterality is often determined by left/right handedness and this phenomenon is considered as an important factor in addiction prevalence. The present study attempts to examine the relationships between left/right handedness with addiction and smoking on Iranian population. In this study, 2000 male...

متن کاملRelationship Between Laterality and Handedness With the Higher Order Sensory Functions and Manual Dexterity of the Elderly
Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the possible effects of laterality and handedness on higher-order sensory functions and manual dexterity of the elderly. Methods: In this non-experimental cross-sectional study, 58 elderly people aged 60-75 years (35 right-handed) were recruited through a convenience sampling method. Laterality of the selected subjects was examined using the E...
متن کاملNaturalizing Self-Consciousness
The crucial problem of self-consciousness is how to account for knowing self-reference without launching into a regress or without presupposing self-consciousness rather than accounting for it (circle). In the literature we find two bottom-up proposals for solving the traditional problem: the postulation of nonconceptual forms of self-consciousness and the postulation of a pre-reflexive form of...
